I received these test parts yesterday, August 11th. In my rush to get things made I neglected to send off the files for the car ends. The fellow doing the cutting assures me he can get them cut & delivered in plenty of time for the convention.
The parts seem to fit just fine so far, though there will be some changes made for grabiron and other starter holes. I tried something new for these and it didn't work out as I thought it would.
Most of the parts are cut from basswood and plywood, though there is some adhesive backed paper that will be used. The styrene roof (the white piece at bottom left) is laser etched to simulate the metal panels used on the cars. There is a small jig included that is used to shape & drill the odd shaped buffers that must be made from stripwood.
The ladders are something of a problem. I may go with Grandt Line parts for these. Grandt door hardware, NBWs & a few other of their detail parts will be used. No trucks, couplers, or underbody brake details are planned for inclusion. These cars were later used by the SR&RL and had air brakes installed. I figure you can detail that part of the car to match the road you model if you like.
The design calls for Grandt Line On2 or On30 trucks, and Kadee 20 or 40 series underset HO couplers for use at standard HO coupler levels. Using Kadee #5s would yield a near-prototype coupler height.

I received the ends yesterday (August 23rd) & built like mad to get this done today. I took the pic then noticed I forgot to glue on the latches... They are on the car now!
The photo shows the car sitting on Grandt Line On30 trucks. It also has Kadee #27 couplers mounted. I cut off the "ears" on the sides of the boxes before gluing them on. To run it as an On30 car with HO coupler height, a small shim will be needed between the trucks & body.
I think this model compares favorably with the SRR prototype boxcar that became SR&RL tool car #562.
Cost & delivery are still unknown.
I'd be happy to get your feedback on this project. Please drop by & have a look if you will be attending the Portland convention.

Bob Bennett was kind enough to bring by his really well done Forney for the photo above. The potato house in the background is an HO version built by Jim Pasquill.
Thanks to all who dropped by for a look. My notepad with email addresses, etc. somehow did not make the trip back with me. If you wrote your contact information in it regarding this boxcar, please send me an email by clicking SCM.

This kit will come less trucks, couplers, and decals. For On30 use Grandt Line #3113 trucks and Kadee #47 or #27 underset shank couplers. Kadee #208 (.015 thick), or #209 (.010 thick) washers may also be needed. For On2 use Grandt Line #3075 trucks and your choice of Kadee or Sergent couplers.
Special consideration will be given those who contact me regarding pricing and availability prior to formal release of this kit.
My notepad has been recovered, and I have contact info from those of you who came by at the convention. Thanks again for your interest & support!

The last few parts for a second test assembly should be here today or tomorrow. If I'm satisfied with how everything fits (I'm really fussy) production quantities of parts will be ordered, instructions written & printed etc., etc. very soon after.
Thanks for your patience!

I've had several items pop up that had to be taken care of before I could get back to this project. First, with my "regular" job, the one that pays the mortgage, I had several small hot jobs with tight schedules that needed to be taken care of. Working around those I also had to finish the instructions (ugh....), kit, & get ready to ship the new O scale Potato House kits. I'm happy to report that the P.H. project is now complete & reserved kits have been shipping for about a week.
Some good news is that I did receive the remaining parts for the boxcar. The bad news is that they arrived broken. Since I had to have more made I took advantage of the time to talk with the cutter. We discussed a few tweaks that should make assembly a little easier. I made a couple of new drawings & sent them over. Unfortunately, his satellite Internet connection went down for several days and he was unable to download the files.
I spoke with him again yesterday. He told me his connection was repaired the day before and that the new parts were in the mail. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!

This is incomplete test build number 3 above. Number 2 is the red one on the home page. I tried to get a good image showing the interior detail when the car is modeled with the doors open. The flash works fine illuminating the exterior. Sadly, I don't have a remote flash tiny enough to get inside the car to lighten it up. So... I Photoshopped the heck out of this image to try to bring out _some_ of the detail without blowing out the rest of the car. Not very successful, but you get the idea. The image at the top of the page shows the scribed floor better than this one, but I think this shows the interior sheathing better.
All for now.
Happy Thanksgiving.
